LandLife:

Supporting the creation of tropical nature reserves

The tropics support by far the greatest number of species per unit area globally. Tropical regions, such as the Andes, and the islands of Maluku in Indonesia, also support many endemic species - species unique to the area, in other words.

Most tropical regions have and continue to suffer from very high rates of habitat loss. That’s why the world’s Biodiversity Hotspots - places with both large numbers of unique species and high rates of habitat loss - are almost all in the Tropics.

What can be done to avert habitat loss and species extinctions in these unique places?

One highly cost-effective and quick conservation tactic is to support the acquisition of land by local conservation and community organisations to create tropical nature reserves. Another is to support indigenous people as they protect their land from incomers intent on stealing their timber and resources.

I’m in the process of forming a small charity that’ll support nature reserve creation in the tropics.
